I, Pencil
My Family Tree as told to Leonard E. Read
I am a lead pencil—the ordinary wooden pencil familiar to all boys and
girls and adults who can read and write.*
Writing is both my vocation and my avocation; that's all I do.

* My official name is "Mongol 482." My many ingredients are
assembled, fabricated, and finished by Eberhard Faber Pencil Company.
Leonard E. Read (1898-1983) founded FEE
in 1946 and served as its president until his death.
"I, Pencil," his
most famous essay, was first published in the December 1958 issue of
The Freeman. Although a few of the manufacturing details and place
names have changed over the past forty years, the principles are unchanged.

The
John Ernest Foundation (TJEF) endeavors to utilize the
diverse expertise and abilities of talented people worldwide
who are linked together in a common mission: to assist
and promote the advancement of individual and community
goals and visions in achieving a more positive world.
TJEF recognizes that many worthy people do not always
have the means to empower their dreams. We hope to provide
resources to assist them.
| "The
86 Percent Solution: How to Succeed in the Biggest
Market Opportunity of the 21st Century" by Vijay
Mahajan and Kamini Banga
"The 86 Percent Solution
makes it abundantly clear that while emerging markets
are the future, the path to this future will not be
a smooth highway. Emerging nations advance in the
balance between tradition and innovation. The solutions
presented in this book are based upon a deep understanding
of the complexities of these markets. The authors
offer insights not only for companies engaged in these
markets, but also for policymakers, NGOs, and worldwide
organizations that want to understand the role that
business can play in innovation and economic development."

Pradesh, India
